The Overton ISD Board of Trustees has officially approved the academic calendar for the 2026–2027 school year, providing families and staff with an early look at important dates and a few meaningful adjustments designed to support both student learning and staff collaboration.
One notable change for the coming year involves how the district will structure time previously set aside for enrichment days. In past years, enrichment days were scheduled where only certain students were asked to attend. For the 2026–2027 school year, those days will instead be replaced with four districtwide early-release Fridays, with two scheduled in each semester.
On these designated Fridays, all students will attend a half day of instruction, after which teachers and staff will use the afternoon hours for professional development, collaboration, and planning. This structure supports several important goals for our district. It increases the total instructional minutes available to students, ensures all students benefit from the additional learning time, and provides dedicated time for our educators to work together to strengthen instruction and support student success.
The calendar also reflects feedback received from both staff and community members. While continuing our successful four-day instructional week model, the approved calendar meets all TEA and state requirements while avoiding any consecutive five-day weeks of instruction, helping maintain a schedule that supports both learning and staff sustainability.
Families may also want to note the following key dates:
Meet the Teacher / Meet the Mustangs Night: Thursday, August 6, 2026
First Day of School for Students: Wednesday, August 12, 2026
Last Day of School: Thursday, May 27, 2027
Graduation Ceremony: Thursday evening, May 27, 2027
As always, consistent attendance remains one of the most important factors in a student’s academic success. Every day of instruction builds upon the previous one, and even occasional absences can make it more difficult for students to stay on pace with their learning.
With that in mind, we encourage families to schedule routine doctor’s appointments, travel, and other family obligations on Fridays when school is not in session whenever possible. Doing so helps students remain engaged in the classroom and supports their continued academic growth.
The 2026–2027 academic calendar reflects Overton ISD’s ongoing commitment to strong instructional time, thoughtful planning for staff, and a schedule that works well for families.
